Compress to a target size
Many forms and sites cap uploads at a size such as 1 MB or 500 KB. Instead of guessing a quality setting, set the size you need. The compressor searches for the best quality that fits and shows you the new size before you download.
How each format is compressed
- JPEG - quality is lowered only as far as needed to fit.
- PNG - first squeezed losslessly; if that is not enough, the colours are reduced step by step, which keeps edges sharp and transparency intact.
The download keeps your original format, so a PNG stays a PNG. Other formats, such as WebP, are compressed as JPEG.
Tips for small files
- Resize first. A 4000-pixel-wide photo shown at 1200 pixels is mostly wasted bytes, and resizing shrinks it more than any compression setting.
- Use JPEG or WebP for photos and PNG for graphics, logos and screenshots.
- Very small targets on large photos will show blockiness; resize then compress for the cleanest result.
Frequently asked questions
Is the image compressor free?
Yes, and it needs no account.
Will it change my image's format?
JPEG and PNG keep their format. Other formats, such as WebP, are saved as JPEG; transparent images always stay PNG.
How close to my target size will it get?
Usually within a few percent. If the target is larger than the current file, there is nothing to compress.
Does compressing reduce the image's dimensions?
No, the width and height stay the same. Use the resizer if you also want a smaller image.
Can I compress many images at once?
Yes. Batch compresses up to 20 images to the same target and downloads them as a ZIP.
