Free Background Remover
Upload an image and get a clean, transparent PNG back in a few seconds. Standard background removal costs zero credits - it is free to use with a free account, with no watermark on the result and nothing to install.
How background removal works here
WoWPixel offers several removal methods so you can match the tool to the image rather than forcing everything through one model.
- Standard (U2Net) - a segmentation model that separates subject from background. Fast, good on most photos, and free.
- AI removal - a higher-quality cloud model for difficult edges like hair, fur, glass and motion blur. Costs 5 credits.
- Simple / solid background - colour-based separation for product shots on a plain backdrop. Often the sharpest option for graphics and logos with hard edges.
If the first result is not clean, switching method is usually more effective than fighting the edge settings.
Getting sharper edges
The Edge refinement slider controls how aggressively the cut-out boundary is smoothed. It defaults to a low value on purpose.
Higher values soften edges, which helps on hair and fur but erodes fine detail. For graphics, logos and anything containing text, keep refinement at 0-2 - smoothing is what turns crisp lettering into mush.
Colour tolerance applies to the simple/solid method and controls how much variation still counts as background. Raise it when a backdrop is unevenly lit; lower it when the subject shares colours with the background.
What it is good at
- E-commerce product photos - Shopify, Etsy and Amazon all favour consistent white or transparent backgrounds.
- Headshots and profile pictures - drop someone onto a brand colour without a studio.
- Logos and graphics - recover a transparent version when the original file is long gone.
- T-shirt and print artwork - transparency is required before anything goes to a print service.
When the result is not clean
Most disappointing cut-outs come from one of a small number of causes, and each has a specific fix rather than a general one.
- The subject blends into the background - a grey jacket against a grey wall gives the model very little to separate. Switch to AI removal, which reasons about the subject rather than about colour boundaries.
- A halo of old background remains - usually the simple/solid method with tolerance set too low. Raise colour tolerance in small steps.
- Part of the subject was cut away - tolerance is too high, so parts of the subject matched the background colour. Lower it, or change method.
- Edges look chewed - edge refinement is too aggressive for the content. Drop it toward 0.
One more thing worth knowing: remove the background before you upscale, not after. Cutting out at the original resolution and then enlarging gives cleaner edges than enlarging first and asking the model to separate an already-interpolated boundary.
Doing several images at once
If you have a product catalogue or a set of headshots that all need the same treatment, the batch processor applies background removal across multiple files and returns them as a single ZIP.
Batch works best when the images are consistent - same lighting, same backdrop, similar subject placement. A mixed set is usually faster to do individually, because you will want a different method for different shots.
Formats and output
You can upload JPEG, PNG, WebP and HEIC/HEIF. Results with transparency are always exported as PNG, because JPEG has no alpha channel and would silently fill your transparent area with white.
If you do not need transparency - say you are placing the subject on a solid colour - exporting as JPEG afterwards will give you a considerably smaller file.
Your images are not kept
Images are processed in memory and are not permanently stored. They may be held briefly while an operation runs, then discarded.
